Kimberly Kossler, Collier’s state Department of Health administrator, said the move up is a cause to celebrate with our community, according to an article written by Liz Freeman from the Naples Daily News. Collier has often been the second healthiest county, behind St. John’s County.
She said in an email that community efforts to make healthy changes and enhance health through collective partnerships led to this outstanding health ranking. The health of our city depends on residents’ healthy choices and stakeholders’ hard work.St. John’s fell to second, followed by Seminole County, Monroe, and Martin counties.
Martin placed fifth, Palm Beach ninth, Sarasota 12th, and Manatee 14th. St. Lucie was 23rd, Leon 24th, Brevard 28th, and Polk 29th in county health rankings.Union County is the least healthy, followed by Putnam and Madison.
The state office says the rankings show counties’ health as a snapshot of community partners’ efforts. The health department partners with local governments, hospitals, health-care centers, schools, churches, and nonprofit agencies to better residents’ health.
“Collier County outperformed other counties and the state in many categories,” said health department spokeswoman Kristine Hollingsworth.“Additionally, our high food environment index, meaning access to healthy food for all, access to exercise opportunities, and lower than the national average adult obesity index indicate that while quality of life is important, these factors, and many others in the county health rankings ensure that Collier residents live longer,” she said. The Blue Zones Project, which supports longevity and good health habits and environments, has partnered with the community’s largest hospital system, NCH Healthcare System, for years.
“In being named the healthiest county in Florida, it is clear that the partnership between NCH and the Blue Zones Project has had a significant positive impact on the health and well-being of Collier County residents and is an excellent example of how community-led initiatives can lead to lasting improvements in public health,” said NCH spokesman Shawn McConnell. He said this partnership has brought community leaders, businesses, and residents together to support healthy living.
“This has included implementing policies and programs that support healthy eating, physical activity, and social connections, as well as encouraging environmental changes that make healthy choices easier and more accessible,” he said.
