Southwest Florida’s television market is set for a change as the E.W. Scripps Company moves to sell its Fox affiliate WFTX-TV to Sun Broadcasting for $40 million. The transaction is scheduled to close in the fourth quarter of 2025 once federal regulators complete the standard approval process.

The deal fits into Scripps’ broader strategy to streamline operations and reduce corporate debt, shifting resources toward other national priorities. For Sun Broadcasting, a privately held company with a strong presence in Southwest Florida, the acquisition significantly expands its reach in both the Fort Myers and Naples markets. Because the purchase falls within Federal Communications Commission ownership limits, no special waivers are required, making regulatory clearance relatively straightforward.

WFTX-TV, known to viewers as Fox 4, has long been a key source of local news, weather coverage, and national Fox programming. While the station’s daily operations will remain unchanged until the sale is finalized, industry observers expect that new ownership could eventually bring subtle adjustments in programming and advertising strategy as Sun integrates the station with its existing radio and television outlets.

The sale underscores a broader trend of local consolidation in regional media. By bringing another major station under locally based ownership, the transaction may influence advertising options and community engagement across Collier and Lee counties. Residents and advertisers alike will be watching closely for any long-term changes once the deal officially closes later this year.
