A Height That’s Anything But Genetic

A Naples teenager is drawing attention—not for athletic feats, but simply for how tall he stands. At 15 years old, Gabriel Yates measures an extraordinary 7 feet, 2 inches. His extraordinary stature, however, isn’t inherited. Gabriel is living with gigantism, a rare condition characterized by excessive growth hormone, typically triggered by a pituitary tumor. Only around 100 cases have been documented in the U.S.

Diagnosis and the Road to Treatment

Gabriel’s journey wasn’t immediate. Although parents noticed he was growing faster than his peers, early medical consultations offered reassurances. It wasn’t until April 2025 that physicians diagnosed him with gigantism. Further evaluation revealed a tumor in his brain, which was successfully removed just this month.

Now, Gabriel’s family is navigating a new phase of care, including regular appointments with specialists such as neurosurgeons, endocrinologists, and ophthalmologists. The treatment will likely continue for years, focused on managing the effects of the removed tumor while monitoring hormone levels.

The Extras Cost More Than You Think

Beyond medical checkups, quotidian tasks have taken on a new complexity. From hunting for size‑22 shoes to custom clothing and even specially measured doors—Gabriel’s family encounters daily challenges that extend far beyond standard parenting logistics.

To help cover mounting medical and everyday expenses, the family has launched a GoFundMe campaign.

Staying Grounded Despite the Growth

Remarkably, Gabriel remains upbeat about his unique situation. Though he’s far taller than nearly everyone around him, he continues to embrace typical teenage routines—going to the mall, hanging out with friends, and even dabbling in acting as a fun creative outlet. And despite the expectation that everyone his height loves basketball? He’s not one of them.
