Florida adds 58,000 New Yorkers and $11 billion in revenue

The latest parcel of news in Florida migration in some ways is more of the same – people continue to move to the Sunshine State in throngs. But this latest nugget comes with a twist: it’s from the IRS. 

Florida, according to IRS migration data analyzed by The Center Square, a statewide news service, has gained more people than any other state since the pandemic began. Overall, 709,120 people relocated to Florida from 2020 to 2021, both from within the U.S. and internationally. And Florida had a net gain of 257,487 people in that time frame, the data shows. The IRS population report, according to The Center Square, is derived from income tax filings.

Residents who moved to Florida, 2020-2021

• New York: 84,365

• California: 40,730

• New Jersey: 40,730

In addition to Florida, other states with big migration gains include Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.

In the more-of-the-same category, a large portion of new Floridians are from the Sunshine State’s best migration friend: New York. Florida posted a net gain of 58,552 New Yorkers in year one of the pandemic, a pilgrimage that also delivered an additional $11 billion in gross income. (In total, 84,365 people left New York for Florida during the same time period but that was offset by 25,813 Floridians who did the opposite, and moved to New York.)
