February: The Month of Love, History, and Change

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s packed with meaning, history, and special observances. From celebrating love to honoring past leaders and recognizing cultural contributions, February is a time for reflection, renewal, and celebration.

Why Is It Called February?

The name February comes from the Latin word Februarius, named after Februa, an ancient Roman festival of purification. The Romans believed in cleansing themselves before the arrival of spring, making February a time of renewal.

February is unique not only for being the shortest month (with just 28 days in common years and 29 days in leap years) but also for holding one of the rarest birthdays–Leap Day, occurring only once every four years on February 29.
