Bonita Springs Battalion Chief Critically Injured on I-75 While Aiding Crash Response

Sun Prairie lost it’s volunteer fire captain during an accidental explosion. I took this photo during the procession that took place to honor our fallen firefighter.

A Bonita Springs Fire & Rescue battalion chief was critically injured early Sunday while directing traffic at a crash scene on Interstate 75, authorities say.

Florida Highway Patrol reports the incident occurred just after 12:30 a.m. on southbound I-75 near mile marker 116, close to the Bonita Beach Road exit. The 51-year-old firefighter was standing on the inside shoulder, wearing a reflective vest, as he helped with traffic control for an unrelated crash when an SUV veered onto the shoulder and struck him.

The SUV was driven by a 58-year-old woman from Naples. FHP said she steered onto the shoulder to avoid slower or stopped traffic ahead.

Emergency crews transported the battalion chief to Gulf Coast Medical Center, where he was listed in critical but stable condition as of the most recent updates.

Community Reaction & Safety Message

The incident has prompted an outpouring of concern and support from residents, fire personnel, and local government. The Bonita Springs Fire Control & Rescue District issued statements emphasizing their commitment to supporting the injured chief, his family, and first responders.

Authorities are also reminding motorists to slow down and use extreme caution when approaching crash scenes on highways. Reflective gear, emergency lighting, and obeying posted reduced-speed or “move over” laws are vital to protecting responders on the road.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, including examining driver behavior, road conditions, visibility, and whether all safety protocols were in place. No charges have been publicly announced yet.
