A Deputy Let Her Go. Two Hours Later, a 96-Year-Old Naples Man Was Dead.

A late-night traffic stop. A speeding driver. A decision made in minutes.

Less than two hours later, a 96-year-old Naples man was dead on I-75 — and now the question is no longer just what happened… but what could have been prevented.

🧠 What Happened

Just after 4 a.m. on March 18, Arthur Gilbert, 96, was driving home after dropping his wife off at the airport.

At the same time, Genise Taylor, 24, was driving the wrong way on I-75 — heading north in the southbound lanes.

Moments later:

  • She crashed head-on into Gilbert’s vehicle near mile marker 110

  • A second vehicle was also struck

  • Gilbert was rushed to the hospital and later died

Authorities say Taylor’s blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

⏱ The Timeline That’s Raising Questions

Here’s what happened in the hours leading up to the crash:

  • 11:30 PM — Taylor leaves her Naples home for Mercato

  • 2:33 AM — Pulled over for going 71 mph in a 45 zone

  • Citation issued. No DUI investigation. Allowed to leave

  • ~3:35 AM — Vehicle seen stopped at an intersection for over 30 minutes

  • 4:10 AM — Enters I-75 the wrong way

  • 4:16 AM — Fatal crash

👉 The key moment: the 2:33 AM traffic stop

🚨 The Traffic Stop That Didn’t Lead to an Arrest

Deputy Eric Pellegrino stopped Taylor for speeding on Tamiami Trail.

  • 71 mph in a 45 mph zone

  • Early morning hours

  • Friends were called to pick her up

She was given a $278 speeding ticket and released.

No DUI arrest. No field sobriety test documented.

⚖️ What Policy Says

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office:

👉 Deputies are expected to make every effort to detect impaired drivers

Now, an internal investigation is underway to determine:

  • whether protocol was followed

  • whether signs of impairment were missed

  • and whether the stop should have escalated

📞 What Happened Next

Traffic cameras later showed Taylor’s vehicle:

  • sitting at a red light for over 30 minutes

  • eventually moving onto the I-75 ramp

  • entering the highway in the wrong direction

Multiple drivers called 911.

One of them didn’t have time to react.

🧠 Inside the Case

During a recorded jail call, prosecutors say Taylor acknowledged:

  • being pulled over earlier that night

  • recognizing the deputy

The call was played in court during her bond hearing.

A judge denied bond.

She now faces:
👉 DUI manslaughter

👮 The Deputy Involved

Deputy Pellegrino:

  • joined CCSO in June 2024

  • previously served in Baltimore County

  • is still active and not on leave

The internal investigation remains ongoing.

🕊️ The Man Who Was Killed

Arthur Gilbert was 96.

A retired geologist. A husband. A longtime Naples resident.

He had just dropped off his wife at the airport.

He was driving home — on a road he had likely driven hundreds of times.

He would have turned 97 next month.

🧠 The Bigger Question

This case isn’t just about one crash.

It’s about a moment — a decision — and what happens when something gets missed.

At 2:33 a.m., a driver going nearly 30 mph over the limit was stopped.

Two hours later, that same driver was going the wrong way on I-75.

👉 The question now:

Where is the line between a routine stop… and a preventable tragedy?
